The reborn York Cycle Rally proved a great success over the weekend attracting well over a thousand visitors all of different ages, abilities and cycle disciplines.
There were a range of group rides to suit all ages from short off road 5-6 mile rides to full days out on the bike heading over to Ripon and back. For the competitive cyclist there were a number of grass track and cyclo-cross races held, with one race having over 100 riders in!
If and when you weren’t cycling, there were a number of stalls to look around selling bikes, cycling kit and accessories as well as demonstrations and talks. There were some great ‘quirky’ bikes on show too such as recumbents, old school trikes and Penny Farthings. You could even have a go on some!
When we were walking around the event the atmosphere was great. Everyone appeared to be really enjoying themselves and were happy talking to and meeting like minded people. It was also great to see so many young children having a wheelie good time too (Sorry, had to get that in somewhere).
For those who travelled from further afield there was a camp site available and it appeared popular with well over 100 tents and camper-vans in the well laid out camping area. Again, all the people we saw and met camping stated how well the event was run and how good it was.
The event which is all volunteer run and organised has grown rapidly in the two years it has been back and the plans are for it to be even bigger next year. The provisional date for next years event is 24th-25th June and we’ll sure be there again!
